Station 1: Read about Counting & Measuring
This station will have a variety of books caretakers can read with their children. I have started highlighting on the station instructions printout the "featured book." The featured book for this STEAM is Pizza at Sally's by Monica Wellington.
Station 2: Make Your Own Pizza Dough
Caretakers may have to measure in more water/flour for consistency. I'll also be providing sandwich baggies for a take home option.
Station 3: Make A Whole Pizza
I CANNOT wait for this station. We have two options for this station because our age range widely varies.
Babies-Toddlers Pizza Option:
This is a pizza set by Lakeshore. It follows the early literacy element of play. I would encourage caretakers to count slices and toppings. I think the fact that they can cut pizza slices attached to velcro IS PRETTY NEAT!
Pre-School and Up Pizza Option:
This is a pizza playset by Kind & Kare. We will have play dough out where kids can make all types of fun toppings. They either make a new pizza dough or use the one they just made. We will be encouraging caretakers to talk (and listen) to their kids as they make their pizza and count any ingredients placed on top!
I do heavily modify based on age ranges. Our STEAM programming sees families from ages two to ten and I try to provide a wide range of opportunities so the older kids are not just sitting there bored (especially if they are not allowed to pick out books yet). Some older siblings come in with their book and then see how much fun their young siblings are having and decide to join in. The other direct observation I have noticed is older siblings wanting to the experiment and still finding it just as cool as their younger siblings. It's pretty fun to watch!
Station 4: Take Home Handout
We made a take home handout of activities to do once this STEAM is done. We are consciously trying to push early literacy tips and make sure we encourage attendance at future programs. Our handout will look similar to the one posted on the ALSC's blog and soon as I get our finished one I will post it as well.
I had a nice size group today. About 20 total and the parents were really into the playdough pizza. I had a mother with daughters who came and she got really into showing her kids how to make dough. The modified pizza worked great with the babies and overall it was a really fun and busy STEAM time.
