Why you'll Like it: Gorgeous Illustrations. Heartwarming topic. Simplistic text.
This was one of my top ten reads in 2015! My bestie Jenna bought me this book and art from the book as a wedding gift. The I received from her is the most talked about piece of art in our house. My husband and I hosted thanksgiving this year at our house and my cousins asked me about the picture hanging in our house and if I had seen the movie. If you have not seen the TV movie version, below is the full movie from 1996. YOUTUBE IS THE BESTTTTT!
More importantly, HBO produced a documentary called The Loving Story released in 2011. Featured below is the trailer.
Book Focus: I highly recommend reading this book. It is a wonderful picture book for all ages. The lovely illustrations featuring the Lovings mixed with the text is a perfect combination. It is short and sweet while still giving a comprehensive view of the difficulty found in dating outside your race during the 1960s. I am constantly using this book for adults with questions or short attention spans on the history of interracial marriage. It is a neat history into the laws governing couples at the time, and the difficulty maintaining a safe (and sane) relationship. If you want to further reading on the struggles of interracial marriages (historically): A Black Nurse, a German Soldier and an unlikely WWII romance is an amazing read, too.
