Why You'll Like it: Kick-ass Heroine. Urban Fantasy. Adrenaline Thrill Ride. Comedic Elements.
I have been in cover lust heaven since before the book was released! Fantasy is my favorite genre. Fantasy featuring a person of color IN ALL THEIR GLORY holds a special place in my heart. I could be wrong, but the last cover I've seen (fantasy-wise) featuring a woman of color on the cover was Octavia Butler's books. Black women featured on fantasy covers are similar to the state of Unicorns: RARE. Oh! This is not the first book of the series. It is the second. I would recommend you read Half-Resurrection Blues for all the character's backstories and formal introductions.
Currently, Kia is my fantasy character. She is this smart-ass that makes you laugh throughout the whole novel. PLUUUUSSS, she's an amazing fighter and can I get a comic of her adventures? A movie? A TV show---someone with money come pick this title up? Kickstarter a web series so I can support it. Anyway, Older tells really good creepy stories. His descriptions of horror elements are along the lines of Tales of the Crypt, which I still cannot watch because it just terrified me as a child. He does a good job blending in a love story, intrigue, and best of all A VARIETY OF CULTURES. The strength of the novel is in character development. I feel by the end of each work, every characters has grown and matured exponentially, which then helps them in battling the paranormal evil that is out in the world.
